Presenter: Kathy Young, Special Education Consultant

Description: This webinar will address the importance of accelerated growth outcomes for students with disabilities and ways to measure, analyze and respond to student data.  Far too often, students with disabilities are expected to have lower performance and growth than their non-disabled peers.  Through experience, it has been observed that with intentional focus on strong instructional practices, examination of leading assessment results and modifications to instruction, accelerated growth does occur for students with disabilities.  The participants will walk away with a belief that this can happen and strategies to begin the work with their students, within their buildings and/or throughout the district.  This webinar will be introductory.

 Learning Objectives:

  • The webinar will review the importance of having accelerated growth targets for students with disabilities.
  • The webinar will discuss ways to measure growth for individual students.
  • The webinar will discuss how to analyze and improve, as relevant, individual outcomes.

From Overwhelm to FLOW: Practical Strategies for Life, Organization, and Well-being Individuals, families, adult service providers

Speaker:
Dr. Aileen Doyle, MD, PhD Candidate, Brainspark and Kristien Smet, MA, Organice

Session Description:
Join Dr. Aileen Doyle, MD, PhD Candidate, from Brainspark and Kristien Smet, MA, from Organice as they introduce the FLOW framework – an empathetic, practical approach to supporting young people and young adults as they move toward independent living.

Young people and young adults often face significant challenges as they move toward independent living. Planning, organizing, and managing daily tasks can feel overwhelming—sometimes without a clear diagnosis, and sometimes connected to ADHD, autism, depression, anxiety, grief, or periods of intense stress. When traditional advice doesn’t fit, these struggles can lead to burnout, frustration, shame, and a sense of failure.

This webinar introduces the FLOW framework – a flexible, strengths-based model focused on Life, Organization, and Well-being. Rather than asking, “Why didn’t you?” FLOW encourages a more supportive question: “What happened?” The framework centers client autonomy and compassion while recognizing the real impact of energy, context, and capacity.

Participants will explore practical, real-world strategies grounded in universal design, including ways to simplify tasks, adapt environments, and shift mindset to support sustainable progress. The session offers an introductory overview of FLOW, with tools participants can begin using immediately. A follow-up webinar will dive deeper into more complex and layered situations.

This webinar is suitable for young people and young adults, family members and support networks, and professionals who support individuals navigating transitions to independent living.

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify common challenges faced by young people and young adults during the transition to independent living, including the role of executive functioning difficulties in daily life.
  • Apply empathetic, collaborative communication strategies that shift conversations from blame to understanding, while supporting autonomy and motivation.
  • Describe and use key elements of the FLOW framework to simplify tasks, adapt environments, and support progress that aligns with individual energy, boundaries, and context.
  • Recognize how universal design principles can reduce barriers and support sustainable, personalized learning and growth./li>

AT in the Workplace

Speaker:
Alanna Raffel, Assistant Director, AT Community Engagement/TechOWL, Institute on Disabilities, College of Education and Human Development, Temple University

Session Description:
Many workplaces rely on standard tools, technologies, and environments that assume everyone works in the same way. For employees with disabilities these assumptions can create unnecessary barriers. This introductory webinar will describe workplace assistive technology (AT) devices for a variety of people with different needs and review universal design principles to improve accessibility for all. Participants will walk away with information about AT options, including examples of built in accessibility features, and knowledge of where to learn more and access additional resources.

Learning Objectives

  • Define assistive technology
  • Identify three (3) assistive technology devices that can be used in the workplace
  • Describe one (1) built in accessibility feature that might be helpful for you or someone you know
  • Analyze one (1) universal design principle and identify a specific way to apply it to increase accessibility in your own life or workplace.

Disability Benefits Basics & Work Incentives

Speaker:
Kathy DiRusso, CPWIC, Director, National Jobs Operations-Best Buddies International, Inc.

Session Description:
This webinar will provide attendees with a practical overview of Social Security disability benefits, work incentives and the Ticket to Work (TTW) Program. Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of how work and earnings can impact SSI and SSDI, and why employment does not automatically mean “losing benefits.” The session will demystify common myths, introduce key work incentives that support employment and financial growth and independence, and explain how Ticket to Work fits into a supported employment framework.

By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Differentiate between SSI and SSDI and describe how earned income affects each benefit.
  • Identify at least three key work incentives that support individuals working while receiving disability benefits.
  • Explain the purpose and basic structure of the Ticket to Work Program and who it is designed to serve.
  • Recognize common myths about work and benefits and apply accurate messaging when supporting individuals and families.
  • Determine when to provide general benefits information versus when to refer to a certified benefits counselor or Employment Network.

  • Learn to build connections and professional friendships between co-workers with and without disabilities

Why Vocational Evaluation Still Matters: A Key Tool for Student Employment Success

Speaker:
Catherine Moran, Consultant, Transition Assessment and Education, Viable Vocations

Session Description:

As schools and adult-service systems increasingly emphasize rapid job placement, vocational evaluation is often misunderstood as optional or reserved only for students with complex needs. In reality, vocational evaluation remains one of the most effective tools for developing individualized, evidence-based employment plans, leading to better post-school outcomes.

This session is designed for transition specialists, special educators, vocational rehabilitation professionals, employment specialists, administrators, and related service providers supporting youth and young adults with disabilities.

Participants will explore how comprehensive vocational evaluation provides meaningful information beyond interest inventories by integrating assessment data, observations, interviews, environmental analysis, and real-world work experiences into employment planning.

Participants will learn practical strategies for determining when a vocational evaluation is appropriate, interpreting findings to guide employment decisions, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, and using emerging AI tools responsibly to enhance, not replace, professional judgment throughout the vocational evaluation process.

Key questions addressed:

  • Why does Vocational Evaluation still matter?
  • What is being lost when Vocational Evaluation is absent?
  • How does Vocational Evaluation improve employment outcomes?
  • How can AI strengthen, not replace, Vocational Evaluation practice?
  • How can schools and employment agencies realistically implement stronger Vocational Evaluation practices?

In addition to her work with TransCen, Judy served on the board of the Ivymount School in Rockville, Maryland, a non-public school serving students with autism, developmental disabilities, communication disorders, learning disabilities, and health impairments. She previously served as an executive board member of the Learning Disabilities Association of Montgomery County, Maryland. She also served on the advisory committee to the Superintendent of Special and Alternative Education of Montgomery County Public Schools, the advisory committee to the Office of Special Education in the Maryland State Department of Education, the advisory committee to the Office of Special Student Services at Montgomery College, and the advisory committee of Montgomery County Public Schools’ Department of Staff Development. In recognition of her work for individuals with disabilities, Judy received the Montgomery County Volunteer Activist Award, the Montgomery County Public Schools Recognition Award, and Honorary Life Membership from the Maryland Congress of Parents and Teachers.

Though Judy Borten’s physical being succumbed to a several-year struggle with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease on September 16, 2019, her keen intellect, amazing athleticism and love for family and cherished friends lives on. Judy touched hundreds of lives during her 81 years, including family, friends, colleagues, and students. She will be dearly missed by her husband/best friend/devoted life-long partner (they met when Judy was just 14 years old) Bill Borten, her sister Adrienne (who Judy idolized) and brother-in-law Martin Zausner, her three sons, Jeff (wife Jill), Dan (Katie) and Matt (Cathy), five grandchildren Ariel (Steven), Jeremy (Darcy), Michael, Holden and Yardley, her new great granddaughter Abigail, and the treasured friends she amassed and with whom she diligently kept in contact throughout her life.

Margit Meissner

Margit was instrumental in the founding of TransCen, and empowered thousands of Montgomery County, Maryland residents to triumph over adversity. Born in Austria and raised in Prague, Margit fled to France when the Nazis annexed Czechoslovakia. After a hair-raising escape from the Nazis, she came penniless to the United States. She eventually settled in the Washington D.C. suburbs where she worked for 20 years for the Montgomery County Public School (MCPS) system. When she retired, she was saluted as an outstanding advocate for children with disabilities. She founded a countywide program that coordinates PTA Special Needs Committees throughout MCPS and provides support for parents of children with disabilities. As an MCPS employee, Margit shed light on equal opportunity for students with disabilities. She introduced programs for gifted students with learning disabilities and cleared obstacles to the first MCPS curricula for students with autism. As MCPS transition coordinator, she developed a model that continues to provide support to special education students as they prepare for life after graduation. Upon her retirement from MCPS in 1992, she worked with the school system to implement compliance activities associated with the Americans with Disabilities Act. In this role, she produced an award-winning public service video designed to reduce the stigmatization of persons with disabilities. Many organizations have saluted Margit as an outstanding advocate for children with disabilities and the including the Maryland Governor’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, the Maryland Arc. In 2003, MCPS presented her with a Distinguished Service Award and named her as “Pioneer Individual” for significantly impacting the successes of special education curricula in the county.

Margit lived an exceptional life. She decided—at the age of 80—that it was time to write a book, Margit’s Story, about her experience as a Holocaust survivor. In the 12 years since the publication of her autobiography, she shared her story with many visitors to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, where she volunteered as a guide and was an original museum donor.

More on Margit’s life and experiences can be found in the links provided below. We encourage you to check them out and share them with others. As the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum posted on their Facebook page, “Remember Margit by sharing her story and listening to her advice about standing up, taking risks, and being curious.”

Edward Sheehy

Edward’s introduction to the field of employment disability issues was personal – his son, Charlie, has autism and an intellectual disability. When Charlie finished school and wanted to work, Edward and his wife contacted Creative Employment Opportunities (CEO) in Milwaukee and in a remarkably short time Charlie found employment.

His Job Developer and Coaches were instrumental and essential in his success. Years later, when Edward decided on a career change, this experience led to a few conversations with Laura Owens and resulted in his joining CEO as a Job Developer.

Earlier, Edward had spent fifteen years as a small business entrepreneur and many other years in purchasing and sales positions. Through these experiences, he acquired the skills that allowed him to approach and convince small businesses to hire CEO/TransCen clients and help them succeed.

Now retired, Edward enjoys travel, walking, golf and coaching Special Olympics. He’s an accomplished singer and songwriter and has also recorded a CD of original music.
